The route of another application within the 2022-2023 academic year of the Faculty of Tourism, Gastronomy and Culinary Arts department was Hekimoğlu Milk Factory, Sultan Pestil Köme Factory, Şiran Tomara Waterfall and Çakırkaya Church. Under the leadership of Dr. Fazıl Kaya and Rıfat Pir, faculty members of the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department, it was aimed to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of students about pestil, kome, milk and dairy products, which are one of the important livelihoods of Gümüşhane province, and natural and cultural values that are the subject of tourism. At the first stop of the trip, the students of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department, who were welcomed by Kelkit Hekimoğlu Dairy Factory Manager Mehmet Hekimoğlu, were informed about the purpose of the facility, its importance for the region, and milk supply. Following this session, the first route of the trip ended with the demonstration of the final products obtained as a result of the production.
In order to get detailed information about the production of pestil and kome, which are identified with Gümüşhane province, and to witness the on-site production, the second stop of the application, Sultan Pestil Kome Factory, was visited. Firstly, herle and tea were served at the facilities, and then information about the production process was given by the facility manager, Tolga Yılmaz. With the information he gave about the facility, Yılmaz talked about the supply of köme and kome raw materials, the production process, the equipment, the hygiene and sanitation practices in the production process and the export of the products. At the end of his speech, questions from the students were answered and the facilities were toured.
Dr. Fazıl Kaya stated the following about the trip, ended after visiting the Tomara Waterfall and Çakırkaya Church, which are among the main tourist attractions of Gümüşhane. “Field applications have a very important function as they provide students with new information and gains such as gaining on-site experience, getting to know tourism destinations, and increasing their communication skills. In addition, obtaining accurate information from experts is another important gain of field applications.”
Meanwhile Lecturer Rıfat Pir maintained that “Field applications play an important role in ensuring the integration of our students with the city. In these applications, production sites are visited, detailed information about the facilities is obtained, and natural and culturally rich regions are visited, so that students gain new information. Thus, students are provided with warm contacts with the city and industry. Satisfying returns from students as a result of these applications make us happy.”
The next stop of the field application tours of the Tourism Faculty Tourism Guidance Department was Kromni Valley and Imera Monastery.
Under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uğur Akdu and Dr. Emine Şimşek Evren, the students of the Tourism Guidance Department, who departed in front of the Rectorate building of our University, were given information about the route, geographical, historical and cultural characteristics of the region during their journey.
Firstly, Kromni Valley and then Imera Monastery were visited. The region, which was under the rule of the Romans, Byzantines, Pontus Greek State and the Ottoman Empire throughout history, hosted many ethnic cultures. For this reason, the students of the Tourism Guidance Department had the opportunity to experience, observe and get to know an ancient region, which is very important in terms of cultural and faith tourism. The architectural features, stylized plant and animal motifs, friezes and columns of the Imera Monastery, which was partially restored a short time ago, were explained to the students. Lecturer Dr. Emine Şimşek Evren emphasized the importance of both the region and the monastery in terms of the history of religions and gave important information within the scope of the History of Religions course taught at the department. Prof. Dr. Uğur Akdu, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of these two geographical and historical destinations on the return route, which are very valuable in terms of regional tourism, for the province of Gümüşhane.
Regarding the field application tours that continue throughout the year, the Rector Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Zeybek said: “Our students had the chance to see and experience places that are not only rich in history and culture, but also have high tourism potential, at this stop of the field application tours that continue uninterruptedly. Our young students coming from different places interact with the local people socially and culturally in the provinces and districts they go to until they graduate from the university. During their university education, they have information about the natural, historical and cultural attractions of the region and can leave the region as a voluntary promotion ambassador. For this purpose, I would like to thank all our teachers, especially Prof. Dr. Sevim Beyza Öztürk Sarıkaya, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, who contribute to the organization of these trips.”
